What Causes Trailer Tire Failure and Recommendation for Size 235/80R16
Question:
We have a 40ft 2011 forest river sandpiper fifthwheel. It’s 40ft long dry weight is 12500 gross weight is 14000. Tire size is 235/80R16. We had replaced the original tires with Goodyear marathon load range E but have had 3 major blowouts. Always put air to recommended max cold level. We must have wrong tire because the ones that came in the camper were great just dry rotted after 5 years. These new ones we have had a blowout every time we go somewhere so we are tired of doing repairs need help finding right tire please

Typically trailer tires fail for the following 3 reasons.
1) Keep your tires fully inflated to the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall. Unlike a passenger car tire, trailer tires feature a stronger sidewall designed to provide greater stability when under load. Failure to fully inflate the tires can cause heat build-up, leading to premature tire failure. Also, a tire only will only realize its specified load rating when inflated to its maximum psi shown on the tire.
2) Do not overload your tires. Your towing system will only be as strong as the capacity of its lowest-rated component. Running your tires when loaded above their stated capacity will increase the heat build-up, shortening your tire life.
3) Most trailer tires are only rated up to 65 mph. Consistently traveling at higher speeds will increase the heat in the tires, which again will shorten their life.
The best tire we have in the size 235/80R16 that you need is the part # LHWL401 which has a capacity of 3,520-lb max load at 80 psi. This tire has a speed rating of 75 mph and a 2 year roadside assistance program.
