Using Dual Hitch Adapter for Hitch Bike Rack and Towing Small MyPod Trailer

Question:

Can I use a dual hitch with a Saris Freedom bike rack and also tow my MyPod Trailer? Looks like dual hitches are only used with hanging bike racks. I drive a 2016 Subaru Outback 3.6

If I am correct in thinking that by dual hitch you mean a dual receiver hitch adapter such as # D-192 from Curt, then yes, you can use the top receiver to carry a hitch-mount hanging-style bike rack like the Swagman # S64152-2, and simultaneously use the bottom receiver for a towing ball mount to tow your trailer. Platform carriers may not provide enough clearance.

This 2-inch hitch adapter item is rated for a total combined tongue weight of 350-lbs and a total trailer weight of 3500-lbs. This means that the loaded bike rack's weight, plus the weight of the loaded trailer's tongue, cannot exceed 350-lbs.

The lightweight aluminum-frame Little Guy MyPod has a tongue weight spec of 110-lbs empty. This will of course increase once you load the trailer. You can use tongue weight scale # e99044 to ensure you remain within the adapter's rating.

You will need to install a 2-inch hitch # 75673 on the car in order to use the adapter and to have enough capacity for the trailer. All adapters reduce hitch capacity by half, due to their being extended and applying more leverage on the hitch tube. So this 4000-lb-rated hitch will have a capacity of 2000-lbs when you use the dual receiver adapter in it. This will probably be fine but it depends on your loaded trailer weight. I linked an installation video for this hitch that shows it on a 2016 Outback.

The MyPod comes with a 7-way blade style trailer electrical connector, like part # H20046, and this will require a mating connector on the Subaru. If you have no trailer wiring you will start off with kit # 118467 which is a plug-in installation as shown in the linked video, and you can then convert that to the 7-way format using part # 37185.

If your MyPod has the electric brake option please advise as you will need additional items including a trailer brake controller like the Prodigy P2 # 90885.
