Recommended Trailer Winch Wiring Options for 1994 Ford F-250 XL

1994 Ford F250 XL winch on a trailer connection

Expert Reply:
To add a trailer winch to your 1994 Ford F-250 XL, the factory 12V power supply will not be substantial enough for the power draw of your winch. You will need to have a separate trailer battery for that function, but you can charge that trailer battery from your vehicle 7-way when you hardwire it.
You will need # 10-1-1 wire along with circuit breaker # 9510 and ring terminal # DW05705-1. This will allow you to get the length of wire needed to connect directly to your vehicle battery, then the 40 amp circuit breaker to protect your system while providing about 15 amps of charge to 7-way 12V connection. Then you will run the 12V trailer wire directly to your battery positive terminal and run the negative terminal directly to the trailer frame for ground. That trailer battery will provide the power and amperage needed to power your winch.
