Why Does the Length of a Trailer Hitch from the Center of the Pin Hole to Edge of Receiver Vary

Question:

Hi There, I had a questions that I cant figure out. I was wondering why there is a difference between the distance of the hitch pin hole to the end of the receiver on different hitch receivers? I went out and measured the distance on a few vehicles and I came up with 3 different dimensions. I found them to be 2.5, 2 inch and 1.5. Why is their this difference? Can you guys help me out?

The reason that you see different lengths is because there is no standard for that measurement. Each manufacturer will design their hitch according to what they feel is best for their particular trailer hitch. The same goes for the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear bumper of a vehicle.

For towing applications this isn't as crucial, but for accessories, like a bike rack # TH934XTR, the measurement from the center of the pin hole to the rear edge of the bumper is important to make sure that it fits.

I have attached a link to our helpful articles related to trailer hitches that you can check out for other information as well.
