What is the Stabilizing Strap that Curt Requires for Some of Their Trailer Hitches

Question:

I need a hitch for my 2014 Subaru cross trek xv just for s bike rack. The rack I looked at says it needs to have “stabilizing straps” used with it or it voids the warranty. 1. What are they? 2. Are the included? 3. Where are they attached? Thanks!

Out of the Curt trailer hitch part # C11286 and part # C13135 for your 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek I recommend going with the part # C13135 as it has 2 inch receiver opening so it will be compatible with a wider range of accessories. Installation videos have been attached for both options.

As you read, per the Curt warranty a stabilization strap must be used for all non-trailer loads. The reason being that they are not supported by their own set of wheels like a trailer would be. A stabilization strap is used to help keep the accessories (or bike rack in your situation) from moving around too much in the receiver opening which causes stress.

A support strap is not included with the trailer hitch since there are multiple applications for a hitch. You can purchase one from Curt listed as part # 18050 on our site. You can install it by looping it around the bike rack and then installing the clip in your trunk/hatch opening or by securing it to the safety chain loop on your trailer hitch.

If you would rather not use the support strap then you will want to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76084 which is a similar trailer hitch that does not have the support strap requirement. An installation video has been linked for you.

I have attached a review video on the strap for you to get an idea of one way to install it. If you don't already have a bike rack let me know what you are looking for in a bike rack and I can make a recommendation for you.
