Can a 1-1/4 to 2 Hitch Adapter be Used with the Sport Rider SE # HLY84FR to Carry 2 E-Bikes

Question:

I read somewhere that you can not use a 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch adapter with the HLY84FR. If that is true, why? I have a 1-1/4 inch hitch and need to transport two e-bikes. I know Thule makes a rack that will work, but I prefer this one if I can use an adapter. Or would you recommend the Thule for some reason?

So the immediate answer is yes, you can use an adapter like the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HTAD to carry the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HLY84FR with your 1-1/4" hitch receiver. The problem that you are going to run into is the Tongue Weight (TW) capacity of your trailer hitch or vehicle (whichever is lowest).

A hitch adapter will cut your TW capacity in half and since 1-1/4" hitch receivers tend to have a lower weight capacity it makes it difficult to stay within your TW capacity especially when carrying e-bikes.

I do recommend going with the Thule EasyFold XT # TH903202 because it has a built-in adapter that makes it compatible with both 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers plus it was created for carrying e-bikes. It features clamps that accommodate the many different frame styles that you see on e-bikes, plus it comes with a ramp for easy loading and unloading of your bikes. It can carry up to 2 bikes that weigh 65 lbs and the bike rack itself weighs 45 lbs. This means that at max capacity your TW will be 170 lbs.

The limited lifetime warranty coupled with the ease of use makes this a great choice that is built to last and will make carrying your e-bikes much easier.
