Comparing Thule Helium, Kuat Alpha, and Swagman Titan Trailer Hitch Bike Racks, 2007 Nissan Maxima

Question:

I have a 07 Nissan Maxima. Is a Class I hitch the only Class hitch I can put on my car? I am a small woman and would really prefer an aluminum read: lightweight hitch bike carrier. Can I use a Helium or Alpha? Is there one better for my car? Should I consider a Swagman is it light weight? Thanks for your help!

For the 2007 Nissan Maxima, the only trailer hitches available are class I hitches. I recommend the Curt Class 1 Hitch # C11264. I have included links to the installation details and a video showing a typical installation for you to view.

Since a class I trailer hitch is what is available for your Maxima, you will need a bike rack compatible with class I hitches. Also, on class I hitches, you will be limited to carrying 2 bikes.

In terms of weight, the Kuat Alpha, # B202-114, will be the lightest at just over 14 pounds. It also includes a built-in anti-rattle device, the ability to fold down, and anti-sway cradles. If you want to lock the rack to the trailer hitch, you will need lock # HL1.

The Thule Helium PRO2, # TH9042PRO, is only a little heavier than the Alpha. It weighs just under 20 pounds. This rack also has a built-in anti-rattle device, the ability to tilt, and anti-sway cradles. You'll also enjoy the 7" spacing between the two bikes this helps to keep your bikes from bumping each other. One feature this rack has over the Alpha is that it comes with an integrated cable lock to secure the bikes to the rack. For the best in features and light weight, I would go with the Helium. I have included a link to the installation details and a video review of this rack for you to view.

A Swagman Rack, like # S63400, will be heavier still, about 32 pounds, but still light weight. It also includes an integrated cable lock, anti-sway cradles, and a tilting design. I have included links to the installation details and a video review of this rack as well. You would have to add a locking anti-rattle hitch pin if you want one, part # S64029.

For any rack, when carrying bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across, I recommend the Adapter Bar, # TH982XT, to carry the bikes more level on the rack.
