How Do Trailer Spindles Typically Install on Trailer Axle
Question:
Jamesen I appreciate you getting back to me so soon but as oddly as this sounds this trailer does not have an axle the spindle is the axle and I have been told that the spindle is pressed in the arm. I would be highly concerned trying to cut this loose with torches due to wiring that runs thru the frame and the wooden floored bottom that is exposed This is just a thought I have considered on having someone cut a slot in the arm and remove the old spindle and replace it with a new one and having it welded in ?

Removing a damaged spindle is the easy part - it can be cut off with a torch or saw. But welding on a new one is another matter and requires the new spindle be welded exactly straight. It is actually easier to replace the entire axle with a new one that has good spindles on both ends. This may even be less costly than having a new spindle welded on by a qualified welder. It will also ensure that both spindles will have the same working lifespan, which would not be the case if only one is replaced. Spindles MUST be welded on perfectly centered and concentric or all types of tire wear, tracking or vibration issues can arise. Only a highly trained welder with the correct jigs should install a new spindle.
