Recommended Trailer Hub To Convert Trailer From 5 Spoke Wheels To 8 x 6.5 Pattern

Question:

Hi there. I'm trying to convert my trailer from 5 spoke utility wheels to 8x6.5. The trailer needs the brakes serviced anyways so I'm looking to do it all at once. The hub currently on the trailer is stamped Dexter 8-174. the trailer manufacturer told me it has 6000 lb axles. looking at the brake backing plate, the brake backing plate is the 5 bolt style. Can you decipher what drum/hub and brakes the axle has from that info? If I need to pull a hub to measure that's fine just let me know. Trailer is a 1996 Interstate 18ST - 18,000GVW.

Based on the information you provided, I recommend the Etrailer Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly Item # AKHD-865-8-K. This hub-and-drum assembly fits 8,000-lb axles (will work on your axles but limited to capacity). It includes an inner bearing (Item # 25580) and race and an outer bearing (Item # 02475) and race, grease seal, grease cap, wheel bolts, and lug nuts. It fits an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

Make sure to confirm that these parts will work with your bearings and trailer.

For brakes, I recommend Electric Trailer Brake Kit with Left and Right Hand Assemblies Item # AKEBRK-7-SA. These are 12 inch self-adjusting brakes. They will work with your axles.

Will this set up work to convert my old hillsboro trailer axles?

This will depend on what type of axles you have on the Hillsboro trailer. Do you know what inner and outer bearings the existing hubs use? If they match up to the parts listed above they'll work great. If you find different numbers please just let me know.
