Installation of Brake Controller to Activate Trailer Brakes on a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder

Question:

I have a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. I recently swapped out the 4 way flat harness and connected a 7 blade RV harness. I plugged them in under the back by the spare tire. Do I need a brake controller as well, or well this set up activate the trailer brakes?

To activate the electric brakes on your trailer you will need to install a brake controller in your 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885 which is our best selling brake controller. This is a proportional brake controller which means it applies power to the trailers brakes in proportion to vehicles braking action.

To install the Prodigy P2 brake controller to your vehicle you will need to check if you have a factory brake controller port underneath your dash. The factory brake controller port would be located underneath and left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. It is a 6-pin plug that would connect to the connector on the Tekonsha Wiring Adapter, part # 3050-P.

If you have the factory brake controller port then all you would need to do is plug in the Tekonsha adapter # 3050-P to the port on the vehicle and the other end to the back of the Prodigy P2 brake controller. Mount the brake controller in your vehicle and plug in your trailer to your vehicle. After making the initial adjustments on your brake controller you are ready to tow your trailer and operate the trailer brakes.

If you do not have the factory brake controller port on your vehicle you will need to hardwire the brake controller to your vehicle. The 4 brake controller wire functions are:

White: Ground, attached to the negative terminal of the vehicles battery
Black: 12v lead, attached to the vehicle's positive battery terminal with a 30amp circuit breaker.
Blue: Electric brakes, attached to the blue electric brake wire on the 7-Way plug.
Red: Stoplight switch, normally located directly off the vehicle's brake pedal. Attach to the wire on the switch that only has a signal when the brake pedal is pressed.

I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Prodigy P2 brake controller.
