10K Torsion Axle Compatibility With Disc Brakes

Question:

Need a new EOH activator for my trailer. Had a Hydrastar 1600 that just quite working after 2nd trip with new truck, wondering about compatibility issues. New truck pulling this trailer is Ram 2016 5500 with factory controller, Hydrastar was a 2007, should these play together or not. Never had an issue with older truck pulling this trailer with an aftermarket controller. We took a gold hydrastar of an older trailer we don't use and it keeps making this clicking noise and keeps the brakes on faintly still causing heat. What unit should I buy for this truck to eliminate these issues . Thanks in advance.

The disc brake kits like # K2R1058D13 are designed for torsion axles and disc brake rated EOH systems which have a higher 1600 psi level than drum brake actuators. This is currently the only kit we have compatible with 10K torsion axles from Lippert or Dexter.

Due to the upgrade to disc brakes, I recommend the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi # HBA16. When using disc brakes the psi required is much higher at 1600 psi versus the 1000 or 1200 psi required for hydraulic drum brake systems. The lines do not need to be changed, but your EOH does. Since you already have this system, I recommend you test it manually to ensure it is working properly without being connected to your electric brake controller. It sounds like the Hydrastar Gold is not working properly, but it may be due to the power, so I recommend checking it, but you will also need to ensure your gold is 1600 psi. If everything works out there, then test your 5 o'clock pin with a circuit tester to make sure your brake controller is delivering the proper signal to your bumper connection. You will want to hit the manual override on your brake controller and a tester like # PTW2993 will get brighter as you manually adjust the voltage delivered. Normally Ram factory integrated brake controllers work with EOH systems from HydraStar, but there are still some at random that don't. When that is the case, I recommend having your Ram brake controller disconnected and Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 90195 installed. There is not a brake controller harness confirmed to fit a 5500 model, so you will need to hardwire it. This controller has a specific EOH mode and works great with these systems.
