Trailer Wiring Harness Options for a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe
Question:
I just read the instructions on how to install the wiring harness part no 118258 on a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe. It appears that all that is necessary is to plug the two connectors from the kit into the two connectors already located on the outside of the vehicle, behind the drivers side rear wheel. What is the purpose of removing all of the inside trim and moving the connectors to the inside of the vehicle? Simply to protect the connectors from the elements? Or is there a different set of connectors within the inside compartment that need to be utilized in the installation?

The Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, # 118258, is designed as a replacement for a factory wiring harness and/or for those 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe models that have a towing package. If your Hyundai Santa Fe does not fall into this category then you need # 118415.
If this does describe your Santa Fe, then you are correct, the connectors and converter are designed to remain in side the vehicle. The point at which the connectors are pushed through from the outside to the inside of the vehicle to connect the 118258 wiring harness is located in a place that necessitates the removal of the trim panels listed in the instructions (linked for reference).
