This is strange because on a trailer, the blinker and brake lights share the same circuit. If you used a wiring harness like # 18002, on your 1997 Ford Ranger, that could explain the problem. This harness does not have a converter box included that converts the signal down to the 2 wire signal used by the trailer.
You will need to install Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118325. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view.
If you are using this type of harness, make sure to test the 4-Way connector at the truck for the correct signals using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. If the signals on the vehicle connector are incorrect, you know that the problem is on the truck wiring. If the signals are correct, then the problem is on the trailer side.
You will want to check both connectors, making sure the main ground wires are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. Next, check the taillights to make sure they are grounded properly. Trailer taillights usually ground through the mounting studs. They, too, have to be connected to a clean and corrosion free metal surface.
