Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 2011 Toyota Prius

Question:

2011 Toyota Prius III I am interested in towing a small pop up camper under 2000lbs. 1300lbs dry weight. The pop up camper has brakes and will need to be tied in. Does this harness support breaks on the trailer? I understand the harness will support the brake lights and turn single. This question is specifically for physical brakes on the trailer. Thank you!

A 4-Way trailer wiring harness such as # C56147 only provides the lighting functions on a trailer and not electric brakes. If the trailer has hydraulic surge brakes and not electric brakes you would not need to add anything to the vehicle or trailer. But if they are electric brakes then what I recommend is to install 7-Way trailer connectors on the vehicle and trailer and you will need a brake controller installed in the vehicle. The brake controller is what controls the trailer brakes.

To add a brake controller and 7-Way you will first install the 4-Way. Then you will need installation kit # ETBC7 which provides the 7-Way, retains use of the 4-Way, and has the wiring and accessories needed to install a brake controller.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2, # 90885, because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.

If the trailer does not already have a 7-Way you can add one using # H20046 or any similar harness that has the additional wiring with it and is not just the plug.
