Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2016 Ram
Question:
Hi, I have a 2016 Ram Truck 4x4, 5.7 hemi, 8 speed transmission along with a 2018 R-Pod 180 approx wt. 3000 lbs. Figure 1000 lbs added weight to be safe. Also, to reach the R-Pod hitch desired height from ground of 18 inch bottom of ball I currently have a 4 inch hitch. Can you please recommend the proper system to purchase? Thank you.

In order to choose the best weight distribution hitch, you will first need to know your total tongue weight. That weight is going to be the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go 2018 R-Pod 180 plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2016 Ram. To determine this you can use a scale such as the # e99044 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you.
The right system is going to be one that has a tongue weight capacity which your total tongue weight falls in the middle of. For example, with a fairly light trailer, and depending on the cargo you have, a reasonable tongue weight to expect might be 500 lbs. If so, the Equal-i-zer # EQ37061ET would be a great option. It has a tongue weight capacity of between 300 and 600 lbs and uses a 4-point system to prevent sway. This system comes with a 2" ball, though it is recommended you use socket # EQ70-00-4800 to help installation. This system does not come with a shank, but # EQ90-02-4340 would give you a 10" rise or 6" drop.
If your tongue weight was over 600 lbs, you may want to take a look at the Reese Strait-Line # RP66073, which has a tongue weight capacity of 800 lbs and is another system that prevents sway. This system would also need a shank. Unlike the Equal-i-zer, the Reese does not come with a ball, so that would require # A-90 for a 2" ball or # 19286 for a 2-5/16" ball.
I've added links to videos about each of these systems for you to take a look at.
