Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon
Question:
I have a 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6L I am looking at a travel trailer - Jayco 154BH Please note hitch weight is 325 and the gross weight is 3200...but that is considering loading 650 lbs of gear into the trailer. Trailer dry weight is ~2500, fully loaded weight is 3200. 1 - am I safe purchasing this trailer to pull behind my Outback? 2 - which trailer hitch would I need to install? 3 - do you have local installers in Santa Clara CA that you would recommend ZIP 95054 Here are Jayco specs Hitch Weight325 lbs.Ship Weight2555 lbs.GVWR3200 lbsLength17foot 10Height9foot 1Width7foot 1Fresh Water10 galGray Water19 galBlack Water19 galL.P. For a trailer hitch for your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon to tow a small trailer the best option is the Draw Tite # 75673 which is a confirmed fit and has a 4,000 lb towing capacity and 600 lb tongue weight capacity. That being said you need to check the owners manual of your vehicle to determine what Subaru states as the towing capacity and be sure not to exceed the lower of the two capacities.
For trailer wiring you then would want the part # 118467 which is also a confirmed fit. I attached install videos for both the hitch and the wiring.
Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
We don't have any authorized installers in your area, but any local garage with a decent reputation would have no problem with this as hitch installs are pretty basic compared to what mechanics normally work on.
