Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander

Question:

Just recently purchased a pop up the overall weight on it is 2200. I want to pull it with a 2010 2.4 liter Outlander. I do not have tow package. What would be the best hitch to install? And what wiring would I need? Thanks!

If you haven't already check the owner's manual of your 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander and make sure you have the towing capacity to handle a 2,200 pound trailer. From my research the 2.4L Outlander has a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds and that's if the trailer has brakes.

If you find you can indeed tow the trailer the best trailer hitch receiver for your Outlander is the Curt # 13581. It is custom made for your vehicle and bolts right onto the frame.

The wiring harness I recommend is # 118518. It's a 4-way trailer connector that plugs into a connector behind the passenger's side trim panel in the rear cargo area of your vehicle. Then you'll need to plug in the fuse holder harness behind your headlight and run it to your battery. Everything necessary, including the 15 amp fuse, comes with the harness.

If the trailer has electric brakes you'll then need to convert the 4-way into a 7-way using our # ETBC7 kit. This kit includes the 7-way connector you'll need at the back of Outlander plus all of the wiring necessary to install it. Then you'll need a brake controller, like the Primus IQ # TK90160, to power the brakes.

You'll also need a ball mount and hitch ball. I've attached a link of our selection of ball mounts for a 2 inch hitch receiver as well as an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop you may need. Once you choose a ball mount you can then choose a hitch ball to fit it.

One way to make choosing a ball mount easier is to go with an adjustable ball mount like the B&W Tow & Stow # BWTS10038B. It features the ability to be flipped under the hitch when not using it and will provide up to 5-1/2 inches of rise or 5 inches of drop.

For a pin and clip to fit you can use # PC3 or if you'd like to have a locking pin you can use # BX8858.

I've also included links to some articles on towing that you might find helpful.
