Since your 2010 Ford F-150 has a 5-1/2 foot bed, you need to use a stationary 5th wheel trailer hitch and a Sidewinder in order to achieve sufficient clearance to tow a 5th wheel trailer. To determine if it is possible to safely tow a 5th wheel, you will need to take some measurements first.

To start, the center of the hitch pin jaws will be 1-1/2 inches forward of the centerline of the rear axle. Measure from that point to the cab of the truck (measurement A). Add 22 inches for the length of a Sidewinder arm to measurement A.

Next measure the width of the 5th wheel trailer overhang and divide by 2 (measurement B). Take measurement A (plus the 22 inches) and subtract from it measurement B to get the amount of clearance you will have. You will need at least 4 inches of clearance to safely make 90 degree turns.

If you have at least 4 inches, then the next step would be to determine if there is a Sidewinder compatible with the pin box on your trailer. You will need the manufacturer name and the model number of the pin box to see if there is a replacement or if you cannot find the name and model number you can measure to determine the correct pin box. I have included a link to our Sidewinder main page for reference and to an article that details how to measure for selection of the correct replacement pin box.

If there is a Sidewinder for your pin box, you could use the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, # RP30047, that you referenced, as long as the gross weight of the trailer you will be towing is less than 16,000 lbs. To install this hitch in your truck I recommend installing the Custom Base Rails and Outboard Installation Kit, # RP56006-53. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to an informational FAQ on Sidewinders.
