An intermittent trailer brake signal is generally caused by one of two things. The first of which is the easiest to check and will be the ground circuit. You will want to ensure that the ground is securely attached to a bare metal surface on the frame. The other possible cause of this problem could be a corroded trailer connector. You will need to clean inside both of the trailer connectors looking for dirt and debris. Use the Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors part # 11755 before reinstalling.

Once these two procedures are complete and you still have an intermittent signal, you will need to begin testing each of the wires on both the vehicle side and trailer side wiring harness. This will in turn allow you to determine which side the wiring problem is occurring on.

Using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993, you will need to probe the brake signal wires just before the connector while having a friend sit inside the vehicle activating each circuit to determine which wire is faulty or not functioning properly.

After the vehicle side has been tested, you will need to do the same for the trailer side. Be sure to trace each of the wires back to their light looking for breaks or frays. If breaks or frays are found, you will need to seal them and re secure them as best as possible. This method will be further explained in the video and articles attached below. A break or fray in the wire can cause your brakes to short circuit.

If you are still not able to find a solution to the problem after using these troubleshooting procedures, let me know and we can do further research.
