Recommended Trailer Brake Controller and Wiring for 2013 Toyota Tacoma

Question:

I have a question on 7 pin wiring harness and brake controllers: I am looking to install in a 2013 Toyota Tacoma. My tacoma has a 4 pin connection already installed. I am looking to purchase the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 or P2..thoughts. Also, Looks like I require #ETBC7. Is there anything else required if I purchase the Brake controller and #ETBC7. Will the Kit contain a mounting bracket for the 7 Connection compatible with the hitch. Thank you in advance for your help.

Starting with the trailer brake controller for your 2013 Toyota Tacoma, both the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 and the P3 # 90195 referenced in your question are fantastic controllers that represent two of the best products within the industry. You really will not go wrong with either option as they both function very similar to each other and are both well known for their reliability and ease of installation.

If I had to choose, I would lean toward the Prodigy P3 for its more user friendly display and physical buttons. The LCD display on the P3 will use actual words to signify particular issues and settings, while the P2 uses simple error codes and letters. The P3 also offers 5 preset, storable settings that will let you dial in your preferred settings for up to 5 different trailers.

Moving on to the brake controller installation, you are exactly correct when you stated in your question that you will just need to install the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7, since you already have a 4-Way installed. This kit will include everything needed to install the brake controller and a fully functional 7-way connector. I have attached a detailed article that breaks down the installation steps for this kit that you might find very helpful.

A mounting bracket to attach the 7-Way connector onto the trailer hitch is included with the kit. You can add the Tow Ready # 18140 for a no-drill application.

This will be everything you need to install the trailer brake controller on your 2013 Toyota Tacoma and activate the trailer's brakes.
