Many car manufacturers will state that a transmission cooler and/or power steering cooler is needed when towing in order to protect the transmission and power steering pump when under load and to be in compliance with warranty requirements. It is always a good idea to use a transmission cooler and power steering cooler when towing, even if the load is a light one. Doing so will extend the life and optimum operating performance of the components.

For a transmission cooler, I recommend the Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, # D12901. This is a class I cooler rated for up to 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight. I have included a link to our transmission cooler FAQ and a video showing a typical installation.

For a power steering cooler, you can go with something simple like the Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Power Steering Cooler, # D12200. Installation is similar to the transmission cooler only you will be using the power steering pump lines.
