Bike Rack Options To Carry 4 Bicycles On My 2005 Volvo XC90

Question:

Is there any way I can avoid installing a hitch to transport at least 4 bikes on the back of my 2005 Volvo XC90? I dont think I can use a roof carrier unassisted for my familys bikes. Thank you!

The most amount of bikes you can carry with a trunk mounted bike rack on your 2005 Volvo XC90 is 3, as this is as much as your vehicle can handle safely. You would have to carry the other bike on the roof of your vehicle if you choose to use a trunk mounted bike rack. The item you selected, Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier, part # TH911XT, is compatible with your vehicle and would be a good option as it features anti-sway cradles. Another 3 bike trunk mounted bike rack I would recommend is the Thule Raceway 3 Bike Carrier, part # TH911XT.

To carry the 4th bicycle on your roof rack, I would recommend the Swagman Upright Roof Mounted Bike Carrier, part # S64720. If you already have a factory roof rack with crossbars, this rack will mount directly to your factory crossbars. If your Volvo just has the factory side rails, you will need a roof rack, like the Inno Square Bar Roof Rack made of the 46 Inch Square Crossbars # INB117 and the Inno Feet # INFR. To assist in mounting a bicycle to the roof rack, the Tire-mounted Wheel Step # PT68ZR, will make loading easier.

The other option, which you stated you wanted to avoid, would be to install a hitch and use a hitch mounted bike rack. The advantage with a hitch mounted bike rack is that you will be able to carry all 4 bicycles as long as you stay within the weight capacity of the bike rack, hitch and vehicle. Hitch mounted bike racks are also a better option for longer trips carrying bicycles. For a hitch, you could use etrailer Trailer Hitch, part # e45KR, which has a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs or 500 lbs,with a weight distribution system which either is plenty to carry a bike rack and bicycles. For a hitch mounted bike rack, The Thule Hitching Post 4 Bike Carrier, part # TH934XTR, which also features the anti-sway cradles. You could also go with a platform style bike rack that features wheel cradles, like the Swagman 4 Bike Rack, part # S64665.

If you decide to do with a trunk mounted bike rack or a hitch mounted bike rack that attaches to the bike frame and will be carrying women, children or alternative frame bicycles, I would recommend Thule Frame Bike Adapter Bar, part # TH982XT. The Thule Adapter Bar will allow you to carry those types of bikes level.
