What is the Correct Weight Distribution System for a 6,500 lb Loaded Trailer?
Question:
Hi, I just purchased a Jayco 264 BHW trailer, 6,500 lbs max loaded. I'm pulling it with a 2010 Suburban 1500. I'm looking at the Equalizer 10,000 lb hitch, will this work or should I look for a 7,000 lb-rated hitch, closer to the actual weight? My thought is to be able to use the hitch if we go up in camper size. Thank you.

The short answer to your question is that yes, the Equal-i-zer, # EQ37100ET, would be a very good choice for you. The most important factor in determining which weight distribution system you should use is tongue weight, which should be 10-15 percent of your gross trailer weight (GTW) plus the weight of whatever cargo you have sitting behind the rear axle of your 2010 Chevy Suburban.
For example, if your Jayco is loaded to max weight at 6,500 lbs, with a tongue weight of 650 lbs, and you have, say, 150 lbs of cargo sitting behind the rear axle of your Suburban, your total tongue weight is 800 lbs. This would make a weight distribution hitch with a tongue weight rating of up to 1,000 lbs such as the Equal-i-zer, # EQ37100ET, a good option.
I have linked a help article on weight distribution systems as well as one on determining trailer tongue weight for you to take a look at.
