Tip for Torquing Hitch Ball of Fastway Weight Distribution System

Question:

Hello: I just received my FA92-00-10000 Fastway e2 Weight Distribution hitch. Step 2 in the instruction manual is to install the ball onto the head and torque to 450 ft lb. Ive got the appropriate socket and torque wrench. My question is how to go about it. Is this procedure correct - put the shank into the trucks receiver and hitch pin - attach Trunnion Hitch Head to the shank by hand tightening the shank bolts - attach ball and tighten to 450 ft-lb using a torque wrench on one side and an open end or crescent wrench on the other side. I was wondering if it would be better to do Step 3 from the install instructions and also tighten the shank bolts to 250 ft lb before installing the ball so that the shank/head would be more rigid? thanks,

I would recommend using the exact procedure you outlined. Tighten the shank bolts first and then with the shank in the vehicle hitch (secured with hitch pin) torque down the hitch ball to 450 ft lbs.
