Transmission Cooler for 2000 Ford F-250 Towing Heavy 5th Wheel Trailer
Question:
I have a large 5th wheel and a few times I have put the truck in a strain pushing the trailer uphill or turning it into a tight spot, when this happens transmission fluid leaks out. After this there is no more leakage and all seems fine, why is it doing this?

Any fluid leaking from a vehicle is a warning. Often this indicates excessive temperatures in your transmission.
If your transmission is stressed to the point of leaking fluid this means that somewhere either a seal, hose or other fitting is being pushed past its limit. My first suggestion is that you try to find that leakage point so you can check whether you have a bad seal or fitting that can be replaced. Driving your truck, let alone towing a trailer with it, with an inadequate trans fluid level could cause you bigger (more expensive) problems.
If your truck does not have a supplemental transmission cooler you might consider adding one. There are many types available, including radiator-style coolers we're all familiar with, like Derale # D13503 which installs with hose adapter kit # D13025. We also have pan-style cooler # D14208 which fits with several transmission options, E4OD, 4R100, 5R100, or 5R100W. Pan coolers allow adding more transmission fluid to your system which greatly improves cooling.
I also suggest carrying some extra trans fluid with you at all times, just in case. I ride a vintage Harley and never leave the house without extra oil!
