Supplemental Braking System and Other Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2009 Jeep Wrangler

Question:

Hi, I am looking to buy a tow bar, trailer hitch and brake system for RV towing my 2009 Jeep wrangler Sahara Stock everything as well as tow on occasion small trailers with the jeep. My question is around brakes for the jeep. I have been looking at the expensive ones you put in front of the drivers seat as well as surge brakes like Ready brake. Can you give me you thoughts on this as I want to modify the jeep as little as possible but I do have a small budget. Thank you

Unfortunately, flat towing a vehicle can be expensive because there a number of parts involved and many of them are pretty costly.

From our experience the surge brake style supplemental braking systems are not up to par with the electric systems like the Roadmaster InvisiBrake # RM-8700. The braking power is just inadequate. Using the InvisiBrake will give you great, reliable braking and once it's installed you never have to worry about it.

With your 2009 Jeep Wrangler you'll also need the Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751452 to monitor the braking system.

Other parts you'll need to flat tow the Jeep are a tow bar, a base plate kit, lighting, and likely a high-low adapter.

One of the more inexpensive tow bars we carry is the Roadmaster Tracker # RM-020. It's a coupler style that fits onto a 2 inch hitch ball. It's compatible with Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit # 1429-1 that fits your Jeep. You'll also need safety cables like # RM-643.

To be legal the Jeep will need to have lights. The less expensive, and easier options are magnetic lights like # TL21RK. From my research you'll also need to disconnect the Jeep's battery so it doesn't drain while towing. We have a battery disconnect, # RM-766, that makes it easier but it isn't required.

Finally, you'll likely need a high-low adapter. I've attached an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop your setup requires. I've also linked our selection of adapters for you to look at once you know what you need.

In addition to my recommendations I've linked some articles on flat towing that you may find helpful.

You also mentioned towing with the Wrangler. If it doesn't already have a hitch receiver and trailer wiring on it let me know I can make some recommendations there as well.
