Recommended Brake Controller And Wiring For 1997 Chevrolet C/K Pickup Truck
Question:
I would like you to recommend me a brake controller that suit my needs. I will be towing a gooseneck or bumperpull livestock trailer only during weekends. The vehicle that I will use is a 1997 Chevy C1500 pick up. Does every brake controller works with this vehicle?

The brake controller I recommend for your 1997 Chevrolet pickup is the Tekonsha P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that applies the brakes in direct proportion to the braking action as the truck. This unit will work with electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes.
If you do not have a trailer wiring harness on your truck, you will need to first install a 4-way trailer harness and then a 7-way harness.
For a 4-way harness I recommend part # 41125. You simply plug this harness into the truck wiring harness located behind the rear bumper or inside the frame channel on the driver's side near the rear of the truck.
When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
You will then need part # ETBC7. This plugs into the 4-way connector and you then need to hardwire the remaining wires as shown in the attached drawing.
