For your 1986 GMC 3500 dump truck, I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional # TK90160. This brake controller will apply trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity as you hit the brakes in your truck. It has a digital display and 3 levels of boost preset for braking strength.

This controller will need to be hardwired as there is not a wiring harness present in your truck. I recommend the Draw-Tite Wiring Kit for Electric Trailer Brake Controllers # 5506 to connect your controller to an existing 7-way. If you need a 7-way, then instead of this kit I recommend the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7 which will use a 4-way and includes the wiring you need to install the controller as well. If you need the 4-way wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM41115 which connects to factory wiring located beneath your vehicle along the driver's side frame rail.

I've attached some videos as well as an article to assist with the installation.
