How To Tell If The Curt Clamp-On 3 Bike Rack Will Fit On A Drawbar Ball Mount

Question:

Have looked at questions about the bike rackjust want to make sure I understand. I assume the drawbar is the heavy bar with the ball on one end and the other end fits into the 2 receiver. I already have a trailer and drawbar and there is a 4 clearance between the end of the receiver and where the ball support is welded to the drawbar. That means there is enough room only need 3 1/8 for the bike rack to slide onto the drawbar, be tightened down with the bolt, and Im ready to mount my 2 bikes. I understand I will need to check with the RV service dept. to see if the weight-distribution set-up needs to be modified. Please let me know if I have missed or misunderstood anything here. I am interested in the rack because my dealer has told me the back trailer bumper will not support a rack and 2 bikes voids the warranty!. Thanks a lot for your input.

You are correct , the drawbar, also called a ball mount, is the bar with the hitch ball on one end and the other end fits into the hitch receiver.

On the Curt Clamp-On 3 Bike Rack, part # C18013, the base does measure 1-1/2 inches, so you will need under 2 inches of room for this rack to slide onto the drawbar. The other measurement you will want to make is from the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch to the ball hole on the drawbar. This measurement will need to be a minimum of 10 inches to be able to have clearance for the bikes after they are mounted on the rack.

If you do not have the 10 inch minimum clearance I would recommend to use a longer drawbar like the Curt Ball Mount, part # D-28. This drawbar measures 14-1/4 inches from the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole.

You will also want to make sure you do not overload the tongue weight capacity on your hitch. You add the tongue weight of the trailer to the bike rack and the bikes, and that total is your total tongue weight. Make sure you are within the tongue weight capacities of both your hitch and your tow vehicle.
