What Are My Wiring Options for Flat Towing a 2011 Honda CRV

Question:

I am considering towing a 2011 Honda CRV using a Roadmaster XL Base Plate and Roadmaster Sterling AT w/ 6 wire. Im uncertain about the electrical system how does it connect to each of the RV and the Honda for operation of the taillights, turn signals and brake lights?

There are a few different options you have to operate the tail light functions of your 2011 Honda CRV when being pulled by your RV. Basically you will run the included 6 way connector from the Sterling tow bar from your RV to lighting method you choose for your CRV.

The first method is to use a Magnetic Towing Light Kit, 20 ft. Long Cord, part # RM-2120. You will need a Adapter 6 Round to 4 Flat, part # HM47320, also. Basically this kit consists of two lights that will attach to your CRV with magnets and will perform the brake, tail, and blinker functions.

The second method you can use, and this is a more permanent solution, would be to use a Tail Light Isolating Diode System with Wiring Harness, part # 38955. This system will wire into your tail light circuitry and operate the tail light functions of your CRV in unison with your RV. You will need to use a # 47465 with this kit also.

This is accomplished by using diodes on your CRV that will allow the RV to control the tail light functions when connected to the RV, while still retaining the functionality of your tail lights when not connected to your RV.

I would recommend you use diodes if you plan on towing your CRV frequently, and the magnets if you are only planning on towing the CRV on rare occasions.

I attached a couple links below that should be helpful to you. One is on how to pick the right wiring kit for your application, and the other is on how to wire a diode system in your tow vehicle.
