Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2017 Ram 2500 with Rambox

Question:

Good afternoon. I am in the process of purchasing a 2017 Ram 2500 with Ramboxes. The question I have for you. Is it possible to tow a fifth wheel trailer. I am just wondering if you could tell me what I would exactly need in order to set this up. Also. I plan on pulling a fifth wheel down the road. No anytime soon. We currently have a pull behind however am I just better off without the boxes and go for the factory install of the fifth wheel set up. Thanks for your time.

Yes, it is possible to tow a 5th wheel trailer with a 2017 Ram 2500 with RamBoxes. However, because of the of the RamBox feature not all 5th wheel products are compatible.

In my opinion, I personally would not get the RamBox feature. The boxes will limit your hitch options and what components that are available will increase the over all expense of a 5th wheel hitch for a Ram with RamBoxes installed.

I recommend getting the factory prep package without the RamBox. For this application, I recommend the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch, # BWRVK3670. This B&W hitch has a 20K weight capacity and will mount right to the Ram's Prep Package with no extra installation kit. This hitch is also a slider hitch that will allow you the clearance to make sharp turns with a short bed truck.

For proper 5th wheel operation with RamBox feature, the use of a Sidewinder pin box on a 5th wheel trailer is recommended to prevent the pin box from contacting the RamBox sides. If using the Sidewinder, you will need to use a fixed 5th wheel hitch like the Pro Series # RP30154 with # RP50054-58 Underbed Kit and Base Rails.

The Sidewinder hitch, like # RP34FR, is specific to the type of OEM pin box installed on the trailer. To determine which Sidewinder you will need, you will need to get the model and part number of the pin box of the ID placard that is located on the pin box. Once you have identified your pin box's part number, contact us and we will be able to help find the correct Sidewinder that will fit your trailer.

I linked a few help articles and product videos for you to review.
