Comparison Between the Tekonsha P2 # 90885 and Primus IQ # TK90160 Electronic Brake Controllers

Question:

1. what is the main difference between the tekonsha P2 and the Primus IQ that the Primus is so much cheaper. 2. I am using a P2 in my current 05 Dodge ram 2500, but there are very few good places to mount it. it is directly above my right knee cap on the lower dash panel,Luckily?? I am short leged and it does not create an issue.I just purchased an 03 Ram 2500 and want to mount another brake controller. Is there another unit from another manufacturer cheaper that compares to the P2?. 3.Is there a secret mount that anyone makes to mount a brake controller in a better place on these trucks. My new 03 does not even have the cubby hole under the radio.

The Prodigy P2 brake controller # 90885 and the Primus IQ # TK90160 share some basic features, but there are many differences. The most obvious ones are the displays and appearances of the units, which are connected to the usability of the brake controllers while towing. The P2 has a brighter, light-colored LED display that is easier to read than the red LED display on the Primus, and the P2 also features a rotary lever for the manual braking feature, while the Primus uses an older style slide lever. Some users say that the slide lever style sticks a bit, depending on the angle from which they are trying to operate it.

You will find more differences between the two models when you start comparing features and functionality. P2 brake controllers can be used with electric over hydraulic trailer brake systems, but a Primus cannot. The P2 also features a more advanced self-diagnosing system than the Primus that checks continuously for problems. A P2 controller will work with trailers that have brakes on 1 to 4 axles, but a Primus will only work with brakes on 1 to 3 axles.

Since mounting sounds like an issue for you, the most important comparison would be the mounting possibilities for each unit. The P2 has a 360 degree mounting range, which is extremely helpful if you need to mount the controller at an angle so it sits more closely against the curvature of the dash on the vehicle. The Primus can only be mounted in a range 70 degrees up from level.

There is not really a secret to mounting a brake controller in your 2003 Dodge Ram, but looking at an install we did on a 1999 model Ram, it looks like the area near your right knee would be a great place for the controller to be mounted. You can see the video at the link provided.
