Trailer Suspension Kit and Leaf Springs Recommendation for a Tandem Axle Boat Trailer 4,600 lbs

Question:

I am looking for a tandem axle trailer hanger kit for my boat trailer. The hangers on the trailer now are 1.5inch front and rear, and 3.75inch Center. I dont see any of your kits that match this. Can I use your APT5 kit? The trailer is a 4600 lb capacity trailer. It has 4 leaf leaf springs that I want to replace also. They measure approximately 25.25inch to 25.5. Should I purchase the e54SR or the sp218275 Springs. I tow a 25foot Wellcraft Sportsman powerboat. I wouldnt mind if the ride height increased a little. Also, can the hangers be bolted to the trailer? Or must they be welded? Thank you.

As long as you are replacing everything (hangers, springs, hardware, equalizer), then yes, you can use our trailer suspension kit, # APT5. In fact, this is the kit that I recommend for your trailer. The hangers must be welded to the trailer. The holes that you see in the top of the hangers are actually for welding, not bolt holes.

For the leaf springs, you will be much happier with the ride quality of part # e54SR for 3,500 lb axles. The other springs you referenced are for 5,000 lb axles, so you would have 10,000 lbs of suspension support for your 4,600 lb trailer, which would do more harm than good to your trailer and your Wellcraft Sportsman powerboat.

I have attached an installation video for the leaf springs and hardware. I have also attached a diagram that you can use to mock up the suspension before you weld anything in place. Keep in mind, this diagram is meant to be used as a starting point. It may be possible that you will have to adjust or slightly move the hangers to make sure the suspension sits level.

The last part that you may need is a u-bolt kit. When replacing suspension, the u-bolts that hold the springs to the axle are usually pretty well rusted. If you need new u-bolts, then you can use part # APUBR-1 if you have 2-3/8 inch diameter axles or part # APUBR-8 if you have 3 inch diameter axles.
