Recommended Weight Distribution System Trunnion Bar Replacements For Increased Capacity

Question:

Hi - I have a Fastway E2 WDH hitch that is rated for a 600 pound tongue weight and a 6000 pound trailer weight that I used to pull a small hybrid trailer. I have since traded the trailer in on a travel trailer with a dry weight of 5,048 pounds and a hitch weight of 464 pounds. I want to keep the loaded weight of the trailer at 6,000 pounds. Can I upgrade the spring bars to the Fastway Bars FA92-01-0889 that are rated at 800 pounds to haul the trailer? This would eliminate the need to purchase the complete WDH package. Thanks for your response!

You can upgrade your Fastway E2 # FA92-00-0600 with Trunnion bars with up to a 600 lb total tongue weight capacity to a larger capacity rating by changing out your trunnion bars. Remember that weight distribution systems will be based on total tongue weight which includes the tongue weight of your loaded trailer (usually 10-15% of the total weight) as well as any cargo behind the rear axle of the towing vehicle. So if you have a 6000 lb trailer with a 15% tongue weight you'd already be at 900 lbs.

If you went with the Replacement Trunnion Spring Bars # FA92-01-0899 you mentioned, you would have up to an 800 lb max capacity. I think that is going to be too low for your application. I recommend getting the # FA92-01-1299 spring bars with a 1200 lb max capacity or the # FA92-01-1099 with a 1000 lb max capacity depending on your needs. You don't want a system maxed out and you don't want too big for too rigid a ride. I recommend loading your trailer and using a scale like # e99044 to determine your needs. I've attached a couple articles to assist.
