Question:
Hello, I plan on towing a 4,000lb trailer and have the Curt hitch already installed and the vehicle comes with the tow package already as well. My question is about the brakes with the trailer do I need a separate brake controlled to have the brakes in the trailer work not just the lights??2016 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS Thank you

Yes. Even with a tow package on your 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS, you will still need to add an electric brake controller. The tow package for your Santa Fe does not include the brake controller or the 7 way trailer connector. If you don't have a 4 way, use # C56184.
To tow a trailer with brakes you will need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This kit will give you the ability to connect your 4-way wiring to the 7-way and then attaching the remaining functions of reverse, 12V power, and Brake Controller. This kit comes with all the wires, connectors, and circuit breakers you need. I've linked a video of this install for you.
You will also need a brake controller, and I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that will allow you to apply the brakes on your trailer with the same intensity and at the same time as you apply them in your Santa Fe. This brake controller is extremely user friendly with the LCD screen, adjustability to your driving preferences, and 3 levels of boost. My favorite part is it removes code deciphering from the equation. It is easy to read and understand, so you know what you need to know with a quick glance.
