Recommended Weight Distribution System With Sway Control For Lightweight Mini Lite Trailers

Question:

I have a 2016 Chevy Colorado 7000lb tow cap. and purchased a used 2016 Rockwood mini lite 2503s 4450lb. empty with about 550 lb tongue wt. and 25long I did a test tow without any sway control on a nice, non-windy day it towed great. Bought the trailerfrom a dealer and had him add a Andersen wd hitchmy choice for what I thought would be added safety. First time out it was pretty windy and I experienced excessive scarysway. I am looking for a replacement for the Andersen. I want and apparently need max. Sway control assistance. Would you suggest a Reese straight line and dual cam, Husky centerline with active sway control or other?

For your sway control issues with your 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and 2016 Rockwood Mini Lite Trailer, I absolutely recommend the Strait-Line System by Reese. For your application, the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW, # RP66083, is the best system for the weights you mentioned. You will need to know your fully loaded tongue weight to choose a system. The best way to do this is to determine your total tongue weight which includes your fully loaded trailer's tongue weight and any weight behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle. I've attached an article to help you in determining tongue weight, or you can use a scale like # e99044.

The strait-line system with it's dual cams and spring bars is really the only system that actively prevents sway instead of correcting sway as it happens with friction. The prevention is because the spring bars keep pressure on the cams and the shape of the bars keeps the bars centered on the cams until a turn overpowers the spring load which keeps the system engaged for sway control on straight roads. Even on turns or curves the system will re-align itself following the turn. For the light trailers, this system is by far superior to the others based on this patented design.
