Canoe Carrier Options for a 2011 Subaru Outback That Does Not Use The Factory Crossbars

Question:

I need to carry a 12 foot wide body aluminum sportspal canoe. my concern is that the new fold away crossbars have a small plastic hook that snaps into place, I would not trust this design to hold the canoe at 120 kmph. the rails have approx 24 inch opening any suggestions?

I spoke with my contact at Thule and you can use the Thule Roof Rack, part # TH710401 and part # TH712200. This roof rack will have a foot pack that will attach to the side rails of your factory roof rack and use Thule 47 inch SquareBars.

With the Thule roof rack installed you will use the Thule Canoe Carrier-Rooftop Carrier, part # TH819. This carrier has padded cradles that attach to the Thule crossbars and use cambuckle tie-down straps to hold the center of the canoe. It also has ratcheting tie-downs to hold the ends of the canoe.

When hauling cargo on the roof of your 2011 Subaru Outback you will want to check the roof weight capacity to make sure you do not exceed the weight limit of your roof. According to Thule your roof's capacity with this rack should be 150 pounds.
