Can the Yakima FullSwing Be Used on the Back of a Trailer
Question:
I was wanting to mount this to the back of a Tear trailer that I am building. The Tear will have an up swinging hatch just like many automobiles but maybe a bit wider. The kitchen for the Tear will be in the rear and it would be great to just swing the bikes out of the way when needing quick access to it. I was wondering what the swing out distance was for model # Y02465? The Tear has a maximum width of 66 inches. If the Hitch was mounted in the center then there should be about 33 inches to the trailer edge. The swing arm would need to be about 16-18 inches when folded in half to allow enough travel distance to swing away from the trailer.

Only certain bike racks are rated for use on a trailer or RV and none of the Yakima or any of the other swinging bike racks are rated for this application. I have no doubt it would swing out far enough but I can't recommend it for this application. There are other options though. Instead of carrying the bikes on the back of the trailer you could use a towing bike rack such as # S64675.
Or you could use the multipurpose ball mount # D210 and put a bike rack in the top receiver part. Using a towing rack or the D210 will allow you access to the trailer hatch without having to worry about having a bike rack rated for use on the back of the trailer.
