Recommended Weight Distribution System for Towing a Black Rock Trailer with a 2016 Ram Rebel

Question:

I will be towing a Blackrock 19 foot trailer behind a 2016 Ram Rebel. The trailer has a dry weight of 4300 pounds and I had no problem towing it behind a 2008 Touareg V8 with only a weight carrying hitch. The Rebel can tow up to 9950 pounds. Should I use a weight distributing hitch with the rebel?

A weight distribution system is recommended whenever the trailer weight is 50 percent of the tow vehicle's weight. In your case, your trailer is definitely weighs more than half of your 2016 Ram Rebel so I recommend using weight distribution.

To choose a system you want to choose one rated for your loaded and ready to tow tongue weight. The total tongue weight consists of the tongue weight of your loaded, and ready to tow trailer added to the amount of weight you have in the bed of your Rebel behind the rear axle. Your Black Rock has a maximum trailer weight of 6200 lbs. The trailer's tongue weight will be approximately 10-15 percent of that. So your trailer's tongue weight will fall roughly somewhere between 600-900 lbs.

I recommend going with the Fastway e2 # FA94-00-0800 which is rated for up to 800 lbs. tongue weight. Fastway uses a steel on steel system that prevents sway rather than reducing it. Help keeping your trailer in line. This system is an 800 lbs. system, if you're loading your trailer to it's maximum and carrying a lot in the bed of your truck, you may want to go with the 1000lbs. system # FA94-00-1000.

For either option you will need a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank, such as # 63840 that has a 2-5/16 inch diameter hitch ball.
