To install the Tekonsha P2 Brake Controller, # 90885, on your 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee, there are 2 possible options. If your Grand Cherokee has a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle, then you will just need to contact the brake controller wiring to the Jeep wiring located under the dash, driver side. You will need a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the vehicle wires for function.

The wire that has a constant signal is the 12-volt power wire and it gets connected to the brake controller black wire. The wire that carries a signal only when the brake pedal is pressed gets connected to the brake controller red wire. To find the electric brake output wire on the vehicle, you will need to apply power to the remaining wires from an external power source. Go back to the 7-Way and use the test light on the pin in the 4 o'clock position. Whichever wire shows a signal at the 7-Way gets connected to the blue wire on the brake controller. The other wire will be the ground.

You may need to wire the brake controller directly to the battery if no power wire is present under the dash. You will need Wiring Kit # 5506. Attach one end of the wire to the black wire on the brake controller. Route the wire through the fire wall and attach the other end to the positive battery terminal via the 30 amp circuit breaker included in the kit.

If your Grand Cherokee does not have a trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle, you will first need to install Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118349. I have included a link to the installation details and a video showing an installation on a similar vehicle.

Next, you will need to install a 4- and 7-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. Plug the 4-Way into the back of the ETBC7. The remaining 4 wires will need to be hardwired to the vehicle. The white wire gets grounded to the vehicle frame. The yellow (or purple) wire gets attached to the reverse light circuit behind one of the taillights. If the trailer does not have reverse lights, this wire can be stowed out of the way. The black wire will attach to the positive terminal of the battery via a 40-amp circuit breaker. The blue wire will get attached to the brake controller blue wire.

You will need to attach the black wire on the brake controller to the positive battery terminal via a 20- or 30-amp circuit breaker (check the brake controller instructions to determine which size to use). The brake controller red wire will attach to the stop light wire on the brake switch located above the brake pedal. Find the wire that only carries a signal when the brake pedal is pressed and connect it to the brake controller red wire. I have included a link to an FAQ article that explains how to install a brake controller from scratch and a link to a video that shows the installation of an ETBC7 kit.
