Installation of a brake controller on your 1998-1999 Chevrolet Tahoe Classic is pretty straight forward. You will need several items to complete the install. First, you will need a working 4-Way connector, item # C55319, if you do not already have one. I have linked installation instructions for you to review.
Once you have a working 4-Way connector you will need a Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, to complete the wiring from the back of the vehicle, to the brake controller and vehicle battery. We have detailed instructions on our Brake Controller Installation, Starting from Scratch page (see link) that will walk you through the process and shows pictures of the installation. The # ETBC7 kit includes all of the wiring and hardware needed to complete the brake controller installation.
Once all of the wires are ran, you will need to install the brake controller in the cab of your Tahoe. There are 4 wires exiting the back of the Primus IQ Controller, item # TK90160, These wires will be connected as follows.
The White wire is connected to the negative battery terminal, the black wire is connected to the positive battery terminal through a 30 amp circuit breaker, included in the # ETBC7 kit. Use a left over length of the double bonded wire to make these connections.
The red wire needs to be spliced to the vehicle stop light circuit. Find this circuit behind the brake pedal under the dash, using a circuit tester, item # PTW2993 if needed. On many Chevrolet vehicles this wire is light blue but use the circuit tester to verify that the wire you use has power only when the brake pedal is pressed.
Finally, the blue wire from the brake controller is attached to the white wire that was ran from the 7-Way connectors blue wire at the rear of the vehicle. The blue wire provides power to the trailer brakes through the 7-way connector.
We also have a brake controller installation video, see link, that is very similar to the installation you will need to do, for you to review.
