Solution for Trailer Connector Not Fitting Securely in Vehicle-Side Socket and Disconnecting

Question:

Ref. Tow Ready 118265 Trailer Wiring Connector Kit I installed the kit and the electrical functions correctly when the external plug is mated. However the 7-pin connector does not stay in contact with the external wiring harness flat to 7 pin plug adapter. Ive tried two different brands of external adapters with slight improvement from one to the other. The trailer connector does not fit snugly and is easily pulled out. It wiggles free with very little vibration. Is there an adjustment that can be made to the vehicle 7-pin receptacle?

Having a trailer connector that won't stay inside a vehicle-side socket is a more common problem than you may think. This is something that comes about because of the large number of trailer connector manufacturers. Some sockets are larger than others and some plugs are smaller than others.

The most common solution for this issue is to use some electrical tape around the trailer connector to help make the connector fit a little tighter inside the socket. This will provide a more secure fit for the connector inside the socket and prevent it from easily disconnecting.
