Safety Chain Placement on Trailer Using Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit Part #FHDPW230300

Question:

Q1. Is the 2 x 3 hinge a new size? I looked on the manufacturers site and they only show 3x3 and 3x4. Q2. Are the safety chains required to stay behind the hinge or can they be remounted in front of the hinge if they are properly mounted/welded by the coupler. It would seem that they would support up-to 5000lbs. The trailer is rated for 3500lbs. Q3. Is the hinge paintable? Id like match the paint with the existing tongue. Thanks.

Fulton has offered this size for a while now. I checked their site, and it is listed. I did notice that the weld-on hinge kit is listed further down toward the bottom of the page, perhaps you did not scroll down far enough?

The safety chains need to mounted rearward (aft) of the hinged portion of the trailer tongue. In the very unlikely event that the hinge should fail, the trailer will still be secured to the tow vehicle.

The fold-away hinge is indeed rated for 5000 lbs, and should be more than sufficient to handle your trailer.

Getting paint to adhere to the zinc finish can be tricky. Your best bet would be to use a good primer before the finish coat.
