What is Needed to Convert a Trailer with Hydraulic Drum Brakes to Electric  

Question:

I currently have a tow vehicle equipped with a draw tite digital brake control part # drt5500. I tow a 23ft boat with electric brakes. I also have a 21ft boat and trailer which weighs 5000 lb combined existing braking system is hydrulac. can you tell me what all parts I would need to make the conversion please ? The trailer is tandom with only one axle equipped with brakes

Since your trailer has hydraulic drum brakes on it already all you need to do is remove the brake lines and hydraulic assemblies so that you can replace them with electric assemblies. To pick out the assemblies will first require you to measure the diameter and width of the drum. A very common size is the 10 inch diameter with 2-1/4 inch width like the part # AKEBRK-35L that has a 3,500 lbs capacity.

I attached a picture that shows where you would need to measure on your hubs to determine the correct size.

I also attached a help article that will walk you through all the steps of adding brakes to your trailer.

For wiring for the brakes you will want 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 which we sell by the foot.
