Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2013 Ford Expedition and 2015 Airstream Trailer

Question:

I have a 2015 19foot Airstream with a coupler height of 17.25. My 2013 Ford Expedition has the top of the 2inch receiver at 20. I currently tow with a 2 5/16inch ball using a bar with a 6inch drop. Which system would the shank have sufficient adjustment for this tow vehicle and trailer? Airstreams have very limited ground clearance. What is the hitch head assembly thickness height, i.e. how far below the coupler does it hang down? What bar weight would you recommend?

Since ground clearance is an issue I recommend a trunnion bar system that does not use chains such as Fastway system # FA92-00-0800. It is rated up to 800 pounds tongue weight and has built-in sway control. The included shank allows for 1-5/8 inches drop and you can adjust the angle of the head for more fine-tuning. Since the receiver on the truck is only 2-3/4 inches higher than the trailer coupler the 1-5/8 drop and angle adjustment will allow you to tow the trailer level.

The only other part you will need is a ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank diameter, # 19286, for a 2-5/16 inch ball.

According to my calculations the shank will hang down the furthest, a little over 8 inches from the top of the receiver opening. I have included a couple of links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you. Determining tongue weight for weight distribution is critical because it is not only the trailer's tongue weight but also the weight of anything carried behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
