Troubleshooting Trailer Using 6-Way to 7-Way Adapter Where Brakes Are Always Locked Up  

Question:

I hooked up my trailer with a 6 pin round connector to my sons truck. He has a 7 pin flat to the 6 pin round with a brake controller and it locks Up the brakes what are we doing Wrong? Hi girl friend has a 2012 F150 without a brake controller same 7 pin flat adapter and no problems? Thanks

This is a fairly common issue when there is a 6-way trailer connector involved. The problem is that there is two ways that a 6-way will get wired and the only difference between the two is that the brake output and 12 volt accessory circuit are swapped. This causes the brakes to lock up whenever the towing setup doesn't use the same wiring setup for both the vehicle and trailer.

On the trailer you will want to cut the wires on the center pin and 2:00 pin and run them to the opposite wire and your problem will be fixed.
