Is Weight Distribution Required When Towing 8400-Lb Trailer With 2005 Ford F-350

Question:

A friend is telling us, that our 2010 Ford F350, with a 12.5K towing capacity, does not need an WD hitch to tow our 8400 lb trailer, is this true? He tows a 10K lb backhoe/trailer without a WD hitch. What is the best way to tow this trailer?

I have attached a helpful article that explains weight distribution and when it is needed. One of the statements is that if the trailer you are towing weighs more than 50 percent of your towing vehicle, weight distribution is recommended, not required. We do however see many folks towing trailers with a truck like yours without weight distribution and have no problem.

If you experience sag when towing, you may want to look at some systems or you may want to think about suspension enhancement like Timbren Suspension Enhancement like part # TFR350SDF. These do not affect the ride when the truck is not loaded but help when weight is added to the truck when towing. These are an easy installation by replacing the bump stops on your truck. The # TFR350SDF system will not increase the load-carrying capacity of your truck.
