Trailer Hitch Recommendation for Light Duty Hauling with a 2004 Toyota Highlander

Question:

Im the nervous new owner of this vehicle, and Im at a loss of what to do about the lack of cargo space in the Highlander. I used to drive a Dodge Caravan with the middle seats folded down into the floor, and I could use it to haul recycling to the transfer station, bicycles, kayaks, landscaping plants, and large Rubbermaid tubs of various river education materials...folding tables, pop-up canopies, etc. Id have my trusty mechanic/body shop weld it on/bolt it on, but I need to be sure Im using the best hitch for the job. The trailer doesnt have to be huge, a small landscapers rig would suffice. It couldnt hurt, however, to have the capacity to tow a small pop-up camper, though.

The three hitches available for your Highlander share the same weight rating, they would install in the same manner and all three are almost identical, visually speaking. The three hitches are on an equal par as far as quality goes, so you can choose the least expensive Curt # 13530 and not feel like you've sacrificed anything.

As you can see in the installation instructions and video (see links), the hitch bolts into place, I wouldn't recommend welding it, because it would void the hitch warranty.

Since you'll be towing, you'll need a few other items to complete your towing system:

Trailer wring harness with 4 pole trailer connector, part # 118413
Ball mount, part # D-4
Hitch Pin and Clip, # PC3
1-7/8 inch trailer ball, part # 19260 or 2 inch ball # 63845

We offer a small trailer, part # K2MMT5X7 that might work well for you. For loads that are too small for a trailer, but too big to fit in your Highlander, a cargo carrier like part # C18151 would be a handy item to have.
