Weight Distribution Recommendation for Towing a 24 Foot Travel Trailer with a 2005 Isuzu Ascender
Question:
On the 61009, the maximum tongue weight is said to be 1,200 lbs. and the maximum trailer weight is 12,000. My inquiry may sound like something that I should know, but is it true that this model will work on my tow vehicle? The sticker on my factory installed hitch states weight carrying 4000 lbs, and the tongue weight of 400. It also reads weight distributing is 7000 lbs with the tongue weight of 912 lbs... I am looking at a 24ft Coachman travel trailer that weighs under 5000 lbs... Am I correct in thinking that my tow vehicle will handle this weight with the 61009 heavy duty round bar? I have a 2005 Isuzu Ascender that has a factory installed hitch. After reading more about the products you offer, I realize that I believe I should get the 66078 with sway control.

You are correct, the 24 foot Coachman travel trailer you are considering will require weight distribution for use with your vehicle, and for safety sway control is a good idea. The dual cam sway control you have referenced is the best sway control available, and keeps sway from starting rather than reacting to it like some other systems. You will need to check your trailer weight fully loaded and ready to tow, to be sure you are within the capacity of the hitch and vehicle. Your vehicle towing capacities are listed in the owners manual.
The trailer tongue weight, fully loaded and ready to tow is the largest consideration when selecting the proper weight distribution system for towing.
For your vehicle with a max tongue weight rating of 912 pounds (check owners manual) the systems you have mentioned will work well and allow you to tow the maximum capacity that your vehicle and hitch are rated to tow. Reese Strait-Line Hitch with Trunnion Bar Weight Distribution - 1,200 lbs TW / 12,000 GTW, item # RP66084 includes the draw bar needed to attach the weight distribution head to.
You will also need to purchase a properly sized hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank for your trailer. The 2-5/16 inch Tow Ready Ball, item # 19286, or the 2 inch Curt Ball, item # A-90, will work nicely with the trailer you have mentioned.
