How to Determine if 2012 Kia Sorento Has Factory Tow Package

Question:

Hello, i am looking to install a curt trailer hitch and wire, and i see on your website. We have a 2012 Sorento SX V6. i see on your page its asking with or without toe package or something. How will i know if it has it or not? sorry if this is a stupid question. Basically if the vehicle came with a trailer hitch out of the factory and this is a replacement kind of thing? Thanks

For a hitch, I'd recommend going with the Draw-Tite Class III hitch, part # 75684 instead of the Curt hitch you mentioned. The Curt hitch warranty requirements state that a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 must be used for non trailer loads like bike racks or cargo carriers. Unfortunately, the small spoiler atop the rear hatch of your Sorento can be damaged by the strap which is why I recommend a different hitch. The Draw-Tite model will fit all models of the 2012 Sorento, regardless of if they have the tow package.

For purposes of choosing a trailer wiring harness, you can determine if your vehicle is equipped with the tow package in one of two ways. First, you can call the dealer and provide them with your VIN. They should be able to tell you if the vehicle has the tow package. Secondly, you can locate the connectors under the vehicle where the trailer wiring harness would plug in. The connectors are above and to the right of the spare tire on the passenger side frame rail as shown in the photo I've provided. if you remove the spare tire first, it'll be easier to access the connectors. You'll want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 on the connectors as a helper activates the taillight, turn signal and brake lamp functions to determine if the connectors under the vehicle are active. If they are, you can use the # C56332 wiring harness. I've linked a video showing the installation.

If the plugs aren't there, or if they're not active, you'll need to use a hardwired kit, part # C59496. The kit includes a circuit tester that you can use to probe the wire harnesses feeding the rear taillight assemblies to determine which wire carries which signal. Tap the green wire into the right turn signal circuit, the yellow into the left turn, the brown into the taillight circuit, the red into the brake lamp and you'll ground the white wire to the vehicle chassis. The black wire would route under the vehicle to the positive battery terminal. I'll link you to an FAQ article that explains how to route the wire.
